Chapter 14

Darek

It took Darek several hours to get things straightened out with his mother, and thankfully, Carla from the nursing home had been a lifesaver. Not only did she volunteer to stay with her through the night, but she called in another one of the workers to help as well so Darek would be able to go to work.

On his long ride home, he couldn’t get the day’s events out of his mind. Knowing that he and Lizzy would soon get the lab report back on the spoon, he needed to consider every option for how it got from his home to the scene of the crime.

His home hadn’t been broken into. He’d found no signs of forced entry, and his alarm had never gone off. That meant whoever took the spoon had a key. Aside from Lizzy, the only person with a key was Raven.

She had given her key back when they had split up, but she could have made a copy, or someone else could have gotten the key from her to make a copy. Someone had gotten into her house to kill Honey. Could it be possible that the same person, who was somehow tied to Raven, got both keys to copy them at once?

Darek raked his hand through his hair and gripped the wheel with the other. He had to figure it out, and he was afraid that it meant calling Raven again. But if she was the killer, he didn’t want to give her a head start.

“I’ve got to see her in person,” he said to himself. “I’ve got to look her in the eyes once and for all, and I’ll know if she’s lying. I’ve got to do it, or it’s going to drive me fucking insane. If I call, she could say anything. I have to do this face to face.” He tried to psych himself up for the call, but he couldn’t help but be upset about it. Being linked to the case in such a blatant way hadn’t happened so far, and he knew what it meant: Bay’s time was upon them and he was next. If he didn’t figure it out soon, he’d be out of time.

He took out his phone and called Lizzy, hoping all the while that he could distract himself from the task. When she didn’t answer, he let out a deep huff and hit the number for Raven.

“Jesus, man,” she said when she answered. “You don’t know when to quit, do you?”

She had already kicked his ass to the curb several times, and after the call about Bay, he was quite certain she never wanted to hear from him again, which might have played perfectly into her plan if she was the real killer. The thoughts kept going through his mind, and now hearing her voice and her harsh tone, he was more determined than ever to know the truth.

“I need to see you, Rave. It’s important.” He didn’t want to lead her on just in case.
